Duval inherited the oldest anise-based drink distillery
in existence, the absinthe distillery that was founded in 1798 by
Major Dubied. The house took on the name of his nephew, Fritz Duval,
at his death. When absinthe was made illegal, Fritz Duval began to produce a Marseilles-style anise-flavoured aperitif which quickly became a success across France.
Refreshing and convivial, Duval Pastis derives its characteristics from a unique blend: superfine alcohol, star-anise anethol), liquorice and sugar syrup are combined with various aromatic essences of herbs and spices. One of Duval’s great secrets lies in the fact that this selection of aromatic essences lends the product all of its flavour and subtlety once they are combined with the anethol and liquorice.
With 45% alc./vol., 2g of anethol per litre and 50 to 500 mg of liquorice, DUVAL Pastis respects the three official requirements which allow it to be called "Pastis de Marseille".
Duval is one of the main brands of pastis de Marseille,
and as such is a reference on
the market of aniseed beverages. It is number 3 in the French market
and has a strong reputation making it one of the great names of French
pastis.
In 2007, DUVAL created and launched the market’s first 2L bottle of anise-flavoured aperitifs. This bottle is made of top-quality PET plastic, is light and easy to hold thanks to its practical handle, it is unbreakable, easily recycled, and a size that is well-suited to the convivial nature of pastis.
