It was in 1830 that Dr. Juppet almost lost his eyesight
from working so many long nights to perfect a cinchona aperitif. He
remembered the book of the bible in which the Archangel Raphael cured
Tobias’ blindness and invoked the name of the same Archangel.
He then created the recipe for St Raphaël and recovered his sight.
For the past 100 years, each bottle is marked with the emblem of the
Archangel Raphael guaranteeing the long life of this surprising tradition.
St Raphaël a marriage between noble wines and
carefully selected aromatic plants with exotic, evocative names: cinchona,
cacao, bitter oranges, vanilla, colombo… Its basic ingredient goes
by the intriguing name of "mistelle", a mix of grape skins
and alcohol that preserves the taste of the fruit by stopping the
fermentation…
The cinchona and bitter orange skins, vanilla and cacao
are macerated together slowly in alcohol until the full flavour has
been absorbed. During the mixing process, the talent of the Chai Master,
respectful of the secular tradition, gives St Raphaël a perfect
balance. The final stage can begin: refrigeration, filtering and bottling.
St Raphaël unites the charms of tradition with
the modernity of the aperitif. It brings together nature, lightness
and freshness and can be consumed in a number of ways. While its subtle
taste incites one to drink it simply on the rocks, St Raphaël
also mixes perfectly with Vodka, Gin or Cognac. It is also the ideal
basis for cocktails with fruit juice, liqueurs or sodas.
