The gentian plant was
grown for a long time for its medicinal properties. Today it
is grown for its trumpet-shaped blue or yellow flowers, but
most of all for the manufacturing of bitter liqueurs.
These traditional drinks from the Massif Central are made from
the gentian root : the root is macerated in spring water and
alcohol in order to extract that characteristic flavour.
They can be consumed as an aperitif or an after-dinner drink
and are appreciated straight up, with ice or mixed with crème
de cassis or sparkling water. |
